March 9, 2026

Dear Valued Patient,

Sadly, operating a solo independent medical practice has become increasingly more challenging over the past several years due to declining health insurance reimbursements and escalating operating costs.

RATHER THAN RETIRE AND SHUT MY DOORS, I will stay on for those who wish to continue to receive their allergy care at my practice. However, effective June 1, 2026, I will no longer be “in-network” with any private pay insurers. For now, I will continue to accept traditional Medicare and Tricare, but that is subject to change.  We will not be able to file to any secondary insurances with who we are out of network.

If you would like to remain my patient and you have private pay insurance, you will be charged for your care at the time of service according to the transparent reasonable fee schedule attached, as the same may be updated from time to time. We will provide you with an itemized invoice at the time of service, but we will no longer submit any charges on your behalf to your health insurance company. You can file the invoice for potential out-of-network reimbursement from your health plan, although we cannot guarantee that any such reimbursement will be available. The criteria for out-of-network reimbursement varies by health plan.

This has been an extremely difficult decision for me to make especially because it has been such an honor and privilege to care for you and so many others in the Grand Strand community over the past 31 years. I realize this new practice model may not be practical for many of you. If you decide to receive your allergy care elsewhere, I will do anything I can to help you transition to a provider of your choice. If you are need of a recommendation, please contact our practice. Your medical records will remain in the custody of my practice, however, if you choose you may contact my office to obtain the necessary paperwork to release your medical records to another provider. With great respect and gratitude,

Sincerely,
Mark Schecker, M.D

Dr. Schecker’s office provides allergy shots for those who require them.  He is proactive in addressing the challenges patients may face and educating his patients, and the community, about symptoms, conditions and treatment plans.

Did you know?

  • Allergies are the 5th leading chronic illness amongst adults in America and the 3rd leading chronic illness amongst children.
  • Nationally, up to 50% of the population has allergies.
  • Nearly 8% of the population has asthma with a growing number of children being diagnosed with the condition.
  • One-third of the population has non-allergic rhinitis.
  • Allergy shots, also known as allergen immunotherapy or allergy vaccines, are FDA approved and do not contain steroids. They are the only treatment for allergy that treats the underlying cause of allergy rather than just controls the symptoms.

Allergy shots:

  • Reduce the likelihood of developing new allergies even after they are discontinued.
  • Reduce the likelihood of children with allergic rhinitis (nasal allergy) developing asthma.
  • When successful, produce beneficial effects that can last for many years even after they are discontinued.

An allergist will treat all types of respiratory illness including colds,

upper respiratory infections, etc. - not just asthma.
